Pine Trail Reservation Winter Camp

In the early winter of 1976 the first Winter Camp was held at Pine Trail Reservation. We had originally held a very small winter camp at our old camp near Hardy, Arkansas, beginning in December 1942 and continuing annually until about 1946. These early camps usually consisted of no more than two dozen boys and a couple of leaders. Other than a few early photographs, we have very little record of their activites, but it appears certain that no memorabilia was offered by these early Winter Camps.

In the mid-1970's Jon "Bar" Barbarotto, a long time active scoutmaster in our council participated in the Woodbadge training program. Part of his "ticket" for Woodbadge involved the creation of a large scale winter camp with a number of activities. Somewhat of a camporee, the event was a council wide gathering at our camp each December. In time, our Order of the Arrow lodge took the lead in staffing these annual events, with Jon at the helm of many of them. Each offered a pocket patch as a memorabilia of the event, with several also offering a staff version. Many were based on standard designs used nationally for various winter klondike campouts.

The last planned Winter Camp was for December 2000, but it was cancelled at the last minute due to a severe ice storm. Shortly thereafter, our council merged.
