Description: As part of the 25th Anniversary set, this was
the Vigil flap available only to the Vigil members. This is one of the very
hardest of our issues to acquire as a result. While a reorder was made at one
point, many remained unsold at the fall fellowship that year. After repeated
requests, the Lodge Professional Advisor allowed sets of all three patches to
be sold, at a premium, to ANY member present that Saturday, waiving the rule on
what membership levels could buy. Thirty-three sets including the Vigil issue
were sold this way. At the end of the fellowship, 303 remaining Vigil flaps
were burned, along with the Ordeal and Brotherhood issues, as planned by the
Professional Advisor. As a result, few of this issue exist. For many years afterwards, rumors abounded that the remaining 25th anniversary flaps were "hidden" for some future emergency fund raising need. Our professional advisor, Jack Roy, always enjoyed a good mystery and allowed these rumors to live, only halfheartedly denying them. About a month before his passing however, he emphatically confirmed that they were all burned. The few he gave out over the years thereafter, came from ones he personally purchased early in the anniversary year. But Jack did have a good laugh that day at all the effort we put into trying to find where he had hidden them! (Keep smiling Jack!) |
