S12 Flap

Blue Book: S12

Description: This issue is interesting in a couple of ways. Both the Blue Book and Arapaho II place this issue next in order of issue, yet it really was issued after the Blue Book S14, S15, S16 and S17 issues! The confusion is undoubtedly caused by the lack of the fdl in all designs up to this point, but it's inclusion in the S14 and onward. The answer to why we would start using the fdl, stop, then start again, is one of those interesting trivia tidbits.

1982 was a pivital year in our lodge with the retirement of our founder and Lodge Professional Advisor, Jack Roy. Also, we ran out of all three flaps in the O/B/V series at the same time. When Jack prepared the order for all three types of flaps, totally several hundred flaps, the Council Executive questioned why so many were being ordered. Prior to this point he apparently had not realized we had three different flaps! To reduce expenses, he instructed that we come back with a single design. This issue (and the related S13) was the result.

So why no fdl? The basic sketch of the design was voted and approved by the lodge at our Fall Fellowship in November 1982. A sketch was even printed in the January 1983 newsletter. Randy Jenkins, working with Jack on the issue, decided to go with a fully embroidered version of our F3, with an fdl added in the left corner, as sketched. The manufacturer simply copied the sketch but omitting the fdl! As a result, we issued a flap without the fdl, after we had issued a series WITH it.

Design adapted by Randy Jenkins.
