S21 Flap

Blue Book: S21

Description: This flap is another example of sending a sample to a manufacturer, only to have the instructions slightly mixed up!

Late in 1989, it was decided to return to a more colorful design versus the white flaps used for the previous few years. This was partly in response to members who just wanted a more colorful flap and partly in response to the scouts who attended the 1991 National Jamboree and felt their flap had been "undervalued" by many traders because of the trend toward brightly colored flaps. In response, we intended to go to a single flap design, using the basic Ordeal flap from our earlier O/B/V three flap series of the 1970s. A copy of our 25th Anniversary Ordeal (Blue Book S9) was provided to the manufacturer (because the cedar trees were clearly represented), with instructions to make the border and name Black, and add the fdl.

When the order was received, ALL the flaps had Gray name lettering instead of Black. Initially, it was discussed that we should reject the order, but it was then realized that 1992 would be the 25th Anniversary of our camp at Pine Trail Reservation. SO...we decided to commemorate our camp anniversary! This seemed to go over very well, and the flap quickly became know as the 25th anniverary of Cedar Valley issue. They also sold out within the about a year!
