S9a Flap

Blue Book: S9a

Description: In 1973 we celebrated our 25th year. To mark the occasion a special series of three flaps, again for Ordeal / Brotherhood / Vigil wear, were produced. These were intended to be like the other three flap series except having the lodge name in silver for our 'Silver' anniversary. The manufacturer used a Light Gray thread for this purpose. It was intended that the number you could buy would be limited, but this was dropped early in June. Also, you could only purchase the flaps up to your current level of OA membership. (i.e. a Brotherhood could buy the Ordeal and Brotherhood flaps, but not the Vigil.) Due to a mixed up reorder, there may be as yet unidentified variants of this flap.

From the beginning, the Lodge Professional Advisor had said whatever was left of this series at the end of the year, would be destroyed. They were sold mainly at summer camp, and thereafter at the council office. The last were sold from the trading post at the 1973 Fall Fellowship. At the end of the Fall Fellowship, perhaps 400 remained. All were burned as planned, the next week. (Yes, really!)

While a sizable number were produced and sold, because of the association with our 25th anniversary, this flap continues to be somewhat harder to find, at least compared to others of the period. At the publication of the 2006 Blue Book it was noticed that there were to variants of the "S9" issue. This S9a was noted NO green hill showing above the left cloud. The S9b has such green showing.
