Early Camps in Eastern Arkansas Council

1936 to 1941

EAAC Issues Main Index
From 1936 through 1940, we operated several temporary or semi-temporary camps at various locations throughout our council. On at least one occasion two camps operated during the same summer season. Other than Camp Frierson and Camp Kia Kima, these camps would resemble a weeklong tent camporee. No buildings or fixed facilities were present. From our review of newspaper articles of that period we see a number of other campouts referred to as "Camp X". Close examination leads us to believe that it was common for a camporee type program to take the name of the campout director or organizer.

These early camps are today barely remembered events. A few newspaper clippings and the few known felt type patches are most of our record. Until recently, we did not believe that our council operated a camp the summer of 1941. This seemed odd until further research determined that we actually leased Camp Kia Kima near Hardy, Arkansas, from Chickasaw Council, Memphis, Tennessee, for that season. We also incorrectly believed that none of these camps had buildings. Recently we learned that Camp Frierson did have a few buildings and almost became our permanent council camp.
